Blyantsfabrikken

The project in Islands Brygge, a former pencil factory surrounded by charming old buildings, is today a place for creative companies and attractive apartments. The existing paving, formerly covering the whole courtyard, is the baseline of the design concept.

As a pixel grid, the existing paving is, tile by tile, replaced with dense ground covering plants, sculptural hedges and trees with characteristic bark and leaves. The edged character of the design creates spaces that are graphic and sharp, meanwhile the plants add a layered textural lushness as a complementing contrast. These are all components to define common spaces in different sizes and uses, while enhancing the charming architecture which the landscape is set in.

To invite users into the courtyard, there are elegant oak benches and tables for both the companies, clients and dwellers to enjoy. On the south side of the building, users are invited to a game of petanque or to play in the custom designed playhouse.
